Today In Zany Science Metaphors

It’s hard for theoretical physicists and those who write about them to describe their supremely complex ideas to us mere mortals. That’s why it’s no surprise that they often fall upon the tool of metaphor to help us comprehend the unfamiliar. Yet even knowing that going in, our heads were struck with aches by the swirling whirlpool of metaphors last month in Dennis Overbye’s New York Times article A Black Hole Mystery Wrapped in a Firewall Paradox.
We decided to send some of our favorites to be illustrated by our friend Maki Naro, a web cartoonist who was a finalist on the reality game show Strip Search.
