Science as Art — Bamboo Up Close
This is what the surface of bamboo looks like under a scanning electron microscope. The image comes from the “Science as Art” series from the materials characterization laboratory at GE Global Research.
According to the scientist who created the picture, Srinivasan Swarminathan, “The image reveals numerous channels (with different sizes) for water transport by capillary motion that enables the bamboo plant to grow. A porous ‘composite’ structure as seen in the image would help in engineering structural materials capable of carrying fluids or gases internally.”
